Tension between the UAR and the Arab Union (Arab Federation) resulted in the fall of as-Said, the Union and the entire Iraqi Hashemite regime during the summer of 1958.

The revolution of 14 July, also known as the Iraqi coup d'état of 1958, took place in Iraq and led to the overthrow of the Hashemite monarchy, which had been established in 1921 by King Faisal I under the protection of the United Kingdom.

The coup led to the end of the Hashemite Arab Federation between Iraq and Jordan, which had been established only 6 months prior.

On August 12, 1958, thirteen individuals were convicted and sentenced to death for subversion against the government of King Abdullah ibn-Hussein.
