up:date September 26, 2021 by Jans Bock-Schroeder

A rare image from the archive of German photo journalist Peter Bock-Schroeder (1913-2001) is now available as PhotoNFT. The Picture shows an indigenous mother with her child sitting on a sidewalk in Peru's capital Lima in front of a Coca Cola advertisement. The photo perfectly sums up the power of photography. Capturing a single moment in history and conveying it into the here and now without embellishing or trivialising it.

Photography combined with blockchain technology is a powerful way to merge visual expression with historical background. Collecting digital assets in the form of non fungible tokens aka NFTs creates a new collector base and thus paves the way for classical film photography and photo journalism to break new ground in the 21st century.

What makes NFTs attractive for collecting photography is their uniqueness, rarity, transferability, indivisibility, and the ability to clearly prove ownership.

NFTPhoto FAQ

A non-fungible token (NFT) is a unit of data stored on a digital ledger, called a blockchain, that certifies a digital asset to be unique and therefore not interchangeable. NFTs can be used to represent items such as photos, videos, audio, and other types of digital files. Access to any copy of the original file, however, is not restricted to the buyer of the NFT. While copies of these digital items are available for anyone to obtain, NFTs are tracked on blockchains to provide the owner with a proof of ownership that is separate from copyright.

Cardano was founded in 2015 by one of the cofounders of Ethereum. The native currency of this blockchain is ADA. Today, it is one of the most valued crypto coins in the world by market capitalization. One of the most distinguishing factors for Cardano when it comes to the blockchains competing for NFT supremacy is the fact that it commits to scientific research as the foundation for platform updates, and research.

NFTs and NFT marketplaces, in particular, have democratized the entire ecosystem of collectible art. Therefore, the new blockchain should be congenial for any person to create their own NFT and trade it without any hassle. When it comes to creating an NFT on the Cardano blockchain, there are a few prerequisites: the ownership of a complete node on the Cardano blockchain, fundamental knowledge of the blockchain CLI and its terminologies, and above everything, the ownership of an ADA wallet funded with at least ADAs.
